Major Events and Activities

October 2007
Coalition formed by car wash operators and vendors as a Ga Chapter of SECWA. Objectives are to remove car washes
from drought exception list, to educate government and public that car washes use very little water because they recycle
water and to develop and propose a local certification program that could be used for car washes and other industries.

Pledge forms and commitments established.

Ga Saves Water Web site established.

Paulding County restricted car washes from being open if they did not
  recycle (coalition members in attendance).

City of Alpharetta imposed higher restrictions on new landscape
  installations. Council asks GNFCC to gather information on water
  dependent businesses. North Fulton Water Committee formed with
  car washes represented.

Governor imposes 10% reduction on water use and impacts car wash
  industry by encouraging public to drive dirty car.

Nominations and initiation fees sent in for next meeting.

November 2007
Board members of Coalition elected.

4 Committees formed to develop certification program, develop
  governmental affairs strategy, educate and market to public, and
  expand membership

December 2007
Identify committee meetings and their completed activities
  Ie Certification Program Finalized

Drought Management Plan that will be started in 2008 Ga General  
  Assembly will be developed over at least a 3 year period

Board conducts all-day meeting to interview potential government
  affairs firm. Contract signed with Hobbs and Associates to begin
  work in Jan 2008.

Meeting with City of Milton

San Antonio Water and Sewer (SAWS) given grant as long as funds spent on
   assisting other municipalities.  San Antonio chose to work with Ga EPD

January 2008
To Introduce Certification Concept the following meetings were held:
  • Paulding County Commission Chair
  • Paulding County Water Authority
  •      Cobb County Water Authority
  •      Henry County Water Authority

Ga EPD-first draft of MOA

North Georgia Water Planning District

Hobbs sets up introductions & check contribution delivery to key Georgia legislators

Certification logo completed

Ga General Assembly establishes additional Water Planning Districts
  modeled after current N.Ga District to cover rest of state.  

Meeting with North Fulton Water Committee

Letters drafted to AJC to counter recent car wash water usage articles.

Ga EPD established coordination between EPD & SAWS for an upcoming
  water seminar/workshop re: certification

February 2008

Governor announces you can water lawn and fill pools
    Local water authorities charged with interpreting, managing and
    enforcing announcement while still cutting 10% usage.

Meeting with North Fulton Water Committee

SB 466 Bill drafted, sponsored and introduced

Second draft of MOU in circulation at EPD

SB 466 passed by Senate Department of Natural Resources Committee

Congratulations!
SB466 has been voted in by both the House and the Senate.  This Bill takes facilities
based car washes off the outdoor water users list!
